Week *8 Diamond Passing Sequence

Instructions/Setup:

This technical passing practice takes place in a 20 by 25-yard area and focuses on developing passing combinations when set up with a diamond shape. The practice involves 8 players, with two balls running simultaneously.

To begin, the two players starting with the balls will pass diagonally to the players on the cones. The player receiving the pass will take a touch and play a 1-2 combination with the wide player. The wide player receives the through ball and passes it to the player at the starting position. The sequence is then repeated, with players following their pass to the next cone throughout the practice.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick and accurate passing – Focus on precision when passing diagonally and ensuring the receiving players take a clean touch before playing the 1-2 combination.

• Movement after the pass – Players should immediately follow their pass and move to the next cone. This helps build continuous movement and reinforces the importance of positioning.

• Timing of the 1-2 combination – The wide player should time their movement to receive the ball in stride, while the central player needs to anticipate the timing of the return pass for a smooth combination.

• Communication – Players should communicate verbally or with hand signals when approaching the ball or setting up for the combination. This helps with team coordination and flow.

Progression 1: Add a Defender

Introduce a passive defender in the center of the diamond. The defender will aim to disrupt the passing combinations, adding pressure for the players.

Focus: Improve decision-making under pressure and work on maintaining possession while adjusting to the defender's position.

Progression 2: Limit Touches

Limit the number of touches per player to 1 or 2 touches to increase the speed of the passing sequence. This forces players to think and act quickly, simulating game situations.

Focus: Enhance the speed of play, quick decision-making, and passing accuracy under tighter control.
