Instructions/Setup:

This drill simulates counter-attacking play, focusing on quick transitions   and defensive recovery. The drill includes two phases, where the direction of   attack changes after the first phase.

Set up a grid with two goals positioned opposite each other. Place one   coach or deeper player at either end of the grid to be used as a bounce pass.   Position two attackers and two defenders. The attackers and defenders begin   in the same positions. Attackers are working to score, while defenders focus   on defending and recovering.

Phase 1 begins with a pass into a coach or deeper attacker. The coach or   attacker returns the pass, and the player delivers a cross into the box. The   two attackers break into the box, aiming to score from the cross. The two   defenders attempt to clear the cross and defend the box while recovering back   to their starting positions.

Phase 2 starts when phase 1 is completed. Players reset and turn around. A   second ball is played into the grid, and the team now attack in the opposite   direction.

Coaching Notes:

   • Quick Transitions: Attackers should burst into space immediately after   receiving the return pass, creating a fast counter-attacking move.

   • Defensive Recovery: Defenders must quickly recover after clearing the   cross, ensuring they track back to defend the second goal.

   • Communication: Attackers should communicate when making runs, and defenders   must communicate on who to track and when to clear the ball.

   • Awareness of Changing Directions: Players should quickly adjust to the   new attacking direction after completing phase 1. The game requires a quick   mental shift and physical transition to the opposite goal.

Progression 1: Add Extra Defender:

Introduce an additional defender in phase 1, increasing the difficulty for   the attacking team. This forces attackers to work harder to create space and   finish under pressure.

Focus: Enhances attacking and decision-making under defensive pressure,   improving both individual and team attack strategies.
