Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 30x36

  • This drill is designed to simulate transitional moments and counter-attacking opportunities. It begins with 2 defenders starting on the goal line, passing the ball back and forth while moving forward toward a line positioned 30 yards out from the goal. This line is 3 yards deeper than the attackers’ starting line.

Once the ball reaches and is stopped on this line, both defenders must sprint around a designated pole placed wide of them. At the same moment, 2 attackers positioned higher up are triggered to burst forward and initiate a 2v2 counter-attack. The aim is for the attackers to capitalize on the defenders being momentarily off-balance and out of position.

  • • Defender Recovery Shape: Emphasize quick reaction and correct recovery angles after rounding the pole to re-establish defensive shape under pressure.

    • Attacking Mentality: Attackers should focus on quick, direct play—using explosive movement and combination play to exploit the brief overload.

    • Timing the Trigger: Reinforce the importance of the ball being fully stopped on the line before triggering the attackers, to replicate game-like cues.

    • Sharp Execution: Players should aim for clean passing and good weight on the final ball to beat the recovering defenders efficiently.

    • Decision-Making: Encourage attackers to make quick decisions—whether to shoot, combine, or isolate a defender—based on how the defense recovers.

  • Add a Third Attacker:

Introduce a third attacker from a deeper position who arrives late into the attack to create a 3v2 scenario, simulating a midfield runner.

Focus: Develops awareness, off-the-ball movement, and improves support play during transitions.

  • Limit Touches on the Attack:

Restrict attackers to a maximum of three touches per player before shooting. This increases the urgency of play and challenges decision-making speed.

Focus: Enhances quick attacking combinations, encourages early shots, and replicates high-pressure moments in real games.
