Instructions/Setup:

This is a fast-paced 4v4+4 small-sided game, where 4 neutral players are positioned on the outside of the grid. These neutral players are limited to 1 touch and are used as bounce players to create space and facilitate goal-scoring opportunities. There are 2 neutral players positioned on each end of the grid, one on either side of the goals.

The game begins with both teams playing 4v4 in the central area, with the goal of scoring 2 goals. The team that scores 2 goals first wins the game. The losing team will rotate with the neutral outside players, and the drill continues with fresh teams.

Coaching Notes:

• Neutral Player Use: Encourage the central players to use the outside neutral players to create overloads and break the defensive shape of the opposition. The 1-touch rule for the neutrals helps the ball move quickly and increases tempo.

• Positioning of Neutrals: Neutrals should always be in positions that are effective in progressing the ball quickly, particularly by providing wide passing options and angles. They need to be aware of when to move to receive and support attacking play.

• Passing & Movement: The players in the middle should focus on quick passing and off-the-ball movement to utilize the neutral players effectively. This movement will open up passing lanes and create space to attack the goal.

• Defensive Organization: Defenders should work to close down the space between the neutral players and the attackers, denying easy passes and forcing turnovers. Communication between defenders and midfielders is key in tracking the neutral players’ movement.

Progression 1: Neutral Players Become Attackers:

Allow the neutral players to score into the main goal, encouraging them to actively participate in the attacking phase.

Focus: Increases attacking options and encourages the central players to look for opportunities to incorporate the neutral players in goal-scoring situations. This enhances team dynamics and promotes fluid attacking play.

Progression 2: Limit Neutral Player Touches:

Reduce the number of touches the neutral players can take (e.g., 1 touch per player), forcing the central players to make quicker decisions and improve their timing of passes.

Focus: Enhances ball circulation and decision-making speed under pressure while improving team coordination between the central and outside players.
