Week *8 1v1 SAQ Race

Instructions/Setup:

This SAQ race takes place in a 20 by 20-yard area and focuses on developing players' one-touch passing, sprint speed, agility, and 1v1 skills. The practice is set up with two lines of cones, creating a racecourse for the players to navigate.

Players start at opposite ends of the area. Upon the coach's signal, they will race towards each other, performing a series of quick passes (one-touch) as they move forward. When the players meet in the middle, they engage in a 1v1 battle, attempting to either defend or score against the opponent.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick and accurate passing – Focus on passing the ball quickly and accurately with one touch. Players should aim to move the ball with purpose, keeping it within their control.

• Sprinting and agility – Encourage players to sprint with explosive speed and change directions quickly when approaching the 1v1 scenario. This will help improve their reaction times and agility.

• 1v1 skills – Players need to make quick decisions in the 1v1 battle. Encourage attackers to be creative and defenders to stay compact and composed.

• Communication and awareness – Players should call out for passes when appropriate and be aware of their position to react effectively during the 1v1 situation.

Progression 1: Add More Cones

Introduce more cones for players to navigate before reaching the 1v1 section. This will increase the complexity of the agility portion and force players to maintain speed and control over a longer distance.

Focus: Improve agility, decision-making under pressure, and the ability to perform at high speed.

Progression 2: Limited Touches

Limit the players to 1 touch when passing in the race. This will encourage faster decisions and a more fluid game-like experience.

Focus: Enhance the ability to control the ball at speed, maintain accuracy, and improve one-touch passing under pressure.
