Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 13 | Pitch size: 50x65
This practice is set up on half a pitch with an additional goal placed at the halfway line. The drill starts with a 4v4 central phase, with a joker player who can be used by the team in possession to create a 5v4 advantage. Both teams are required to complete a set number of successful passes (e.g., "x" passes) before switching the ball to one of the wide players.
Once the ball is switched to a wide player, both teams transition into a 3v3 attacking phase in the box. Both teams can attack either end of the pitch, making this drill dynamic and focusing on both offensive and defensive transitions.
• Ball Circulation: Stress the importance of quick, accurate passing and movement to create passing lanes and complete the required number of passes before switching to the wide players.
• Wide Play: The wide players must be ready to receive the ball quickly, looking to attack space and create a crossing or cut-back opportunity into the box.
• Decision Making: Attackers and defenders must make quick decisions in transition, deciding whether to press or drop back when the ball is switched to the wide player.
• Defensive Shape: Defenders should be aware of their positioning as they move from a 4v4 to a 3v3 in the box. They need to track attacking runs and stay compact to prevent goal-scoring opportunities.
Add a Defender to the Wide Area:
Introduce a neutral defender in the wide areas who works with the attacking team to support the build-up play. This adds an extra layer of complexity to the wide phase of the drill.
Focus: This progression helps players to develop their wide attacking play under pressure and improves their ability to create space and deliver effective crosses.
