Instructions/Setup:
This technical passing practice takes place in a 15 by 15-yard area and focuses on players executing short combinations and making sharp movements to receive. We have 10 players in total, with one player starting at each station and two players starting at the outside mannequins.
To begin, the first pass is played down the line, followed by a 1-2 combination around the mannequin. The next pass is played to the player moving off the pole to receive, who then turns and plays a cross to the player at the diagonal mannequin. A second player moves off a pole to receive the bounce pass and plays a 1-2 combination before the sequence is then repeated from the opposite side. Players must follow their pass to the next station.
Coaching Notes:
• Sharp movement off the ball – Encourage players to make sharp, quick movements when moving off the poles. They should always be looking to create space for the next pass.
• Quick, accurate passing – Emphasize the importance of sharp, accurate passes. Players should aim to make passes with the correct weight and timing to allow for smooth combinations.
• Focus on the first touch – Players should focus on their first touch, ensuring it is controlled and directed towards the next pass. This will help maintain the flow of the practice.
• Maintain intensity – Encourage players to maintain a high intensity throughout the practice. The combination of passing, moving, and following the pass will help improve their match fitness and decision-making.
Progression 1: Add Pressure
Introduce a defender in the middle of the area. The players now have to work on their combinations while under pressure, focusing on quick decision-making and maintaining possession.
Focus: Enhance passing accuracy and timing under pressure, along with improving the ability to read the game and react quickly.
Progression 2: Limit Touches
Limit each player to one or two touches per pass. This will increase the speed of the practice and force players to make quicker decisions while maintaining accuracy.
Focus: Improve passing speed and decision-making under time pressure, as well as the ability to maintain possession with fewer touches.
