30x35
Instructions/Setup:
This practice takes place in a 30 by 35-yard area and focuses on developing pressing as a unit to regain possession and counterattack from the midfielder. The practice emphasizes high pressing, compactness, and the ability to quickly transition to attack once possession is won.
Coaching Notes:
• Pressing as a unit – Encourage the team to press together as a cohesive unit, ensuring all players are closing down space and working in tandem to limit passing options for the opposition.
• Intensity and timing – Press with intensity, but ensure players time their presses well to avoid leaving gaps for the opposition to exploit.
• Communication – Players should constantly communicate with each other to ensure the press is coordinated and players are aware of their responsibilities.
• Quick transition to attack – Once possession is won, encourage the team to transition quickly into attack, utilizing the midfielders to link the play and exploit the space left by the opposition.
Progression 1: Limit Touches for Defenders
Restrict the number of touches defenders can take when playing out from the back, forcing them to play quicker and under more pressure. This increases the difficulty of the press for the defending team.
Focus: Improve the team’s ability to press effectively and win possession in advanced areas, forcing the opposition into rushed decisions.
Progression 2: Counterattack after Winning Possession
Once possession is won, the team must immediately play a pass to the midfielders or attackers to create a fast counterattack toward the goal.
Focus: Enhance the speed and effectiveness of counterattacks after regaining possession, focusing on quick ball movement and exploiting spaces left by the opposition.
