Instructions/Setup:

This practice takes place in a 20 by 25-yard area and focuses on developing the diamond formation in possession during transitional rondos.

The area is split in half, with a goal and goalkeeper at each end. We begin with a 4v2 rondo in one half of the area, with the objective being to complete 6 consecutive passes before transferring possession to the other area.

When the pass is played through, the three waiting players (including the goalkeeper) become active, and the central player switches sides to create the team of four. The two defenders who were on the sidelines will join, looking to win the ball back in the 4v2.

If the defenders win possession, they can combine or finish in the goals. Players will switch roles after each goal is scored or after a set period of time.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick, accurate passing – Focus on maintaining quick, sharp passing to ensure the ball is moved efficiently through the diamond formation. Players should look to pass the ball with precision to their teammates.

• Movement to create space – Players should move intelligently to create angles and passing lanes, helping the ball to move quickly through the diamond. Encourage off-the-ball runs to support the player in possession.

• Transitioning into attack/defense – Emphasize the importance of a quick transition when possession is lost or won. When the ball is played through to the other side, players must react quickly to the change in tempo and move into their new roles.

• Defensive pressure and anticipation – Defenders should focus on anticipating passes and applying pressure, looking to win possession quickly. Encourage them to be proactive in closing down passing lanes.

Progression 1: Increase Passes Before Transition

Increase the number of consecutive passes required before transitioning the ball to the other side (e.g., 8 or 10 passes). This progression forces the attacking team to work harder to maintain possession and create space for additional passes.

Focus: Develop the players' patience in possession and ability to retain the ball under pressure while progressing through the diamond.

Progression 2: Add a Second Defender

Introduce a second defender into the central area, making it a 4v3 when the ball is transitioned. The attacking players will need to focus on quick movement and combination play to break the defensive line.

Focus: Improve decision-making, quick ball movement, and how to break down a more compact defensive shape when transitioning possession.
