Instructions/Setup:

Play starts with 3 players combining in the wide areas, focusing on quick passes and movement to create space. They deliver a cross into the box, aiming for one or two of the wide players to finish unopposed. The emphasis is on accurate crossing and attacking runs to get into goal-scoring positions.

After the unopposed finish, the coach serves the ball back to the 3 players, who now attack in a 3v3 situation against 3 defenders. The defenders start from behind the goalkeeper, and the game continues until the ball goes dead. Both teams are encouraged to score during the 3v3 phase, with the focus on quick transitions and decision-making.

Coaching Notes:

• Crossing Quality: Players should focus on delivering accurate, well-paced crosses into the box. Emphasize the importance of varying the cross, including driven balls and lofted crosses, to catch the defenders off guard.

• Timing of Runs: Attacking players must time their runs into the box effectively, attacking the space and the cross. Encourage attackers to read the delivery and adjust their runs to meet the ball.

• Attacker’s First Touch: After the cross is delivered, players should focus on using their first touch to control the ball and set up an unopposed finish. Remind players to stay calm and composed in front of goal.

• Transition to 3v3: Once the unopposed finish is completed, players immediately transition into the 3v3 scenario. Encourage quick thinking and movement as the attacking team works to break down the defenders.

• Defender’s Positioning: Defenders should focus on staying goal-side, blocking passing lanes, and staying tight to their mark. They must also anticipate crosses and be ready to clear the ball or disrupt attacking moves.

Progression 1: Increase Pressure in 3v3:

Introduce a rule where defenders can press more aggressively earlier in the 3v3 phase. This increases the intensity and forces attackers to make quicker decisions.

Focus: Enhances attackers’ ability to create space and make quick decisions under pressure.

Progression 2: Add a Counter-Attack Option:

Allow the defending team to play a long pass into the attacking area after a defensive clearance. This forces both teams to transition quickly from offense to defense and vice versa.

Focus: Builds players' ability to shift between attacking and defending quickly while maintaining composure in high-pressure situations.
