Instructions/Setup:
This practice focuses on developing player understanding and technical passing within a 3-4-3 formation. Set up the area with cones or markers to represent the zones where players will operate. Divide the players into three groups: defenders, midfielders, and attackers, each positioned according to the 3-4-3 formation.
The defenders (3) will work on building possession from the back, while the midfielders (4) will focus on supporting the play in the middle of the field. The attackers (3) will be tasked with creating space and making runs to receive passes in advanced areas. The practice will involve quick passing combinations, movement, and transitions between the lines.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing accuracy and tempo – Players should focus on maintaining quick, accurate passes throughout the drill. Encourage the use of short, sharp passes to maintain possession, with an emphasis on moving the ball quickly to create space.
• Movement to support the ball – The players, particularly the midfielders, should move constantly to support the ball carrier. Ensure that the central midfielders provide passing options to the defenders, and the wingers support the forwards.
• Transition from defense to attack – Emphasize the importance of quickly transitioning from defense to attack once possession is won. The defenders need to make quick passes to the midfielders, who can then link up with the forwards to progress the ball into the attacking third.
• Maintaining width and depth – The wingers should provide width to stretch the opposition and allow the midfielders to find space. The forwards should make intelligent runs to create space for each other and open up passing lanes.
• Timing of passes and runs – The attackers should time their runs to receive the ball in dangerous positions. The midfielders should be aware of when to make the pass and when to hold possession to wait for the right moment to release the ball.
Progression 1: Add a Defender
Introduce a defender to the practice to increase pressure on the ball carrier. The defender should apply pressure on the player receiving the pass, forcing the team to move the ball quickly and accurately under pressure.
Focus: Improve passing accuracy and decision-making under pressure, while ensuring that the attacking players are aware of the space and make intelligent runs.
Progression 2: Create a Game Scenario
Set up a game-like situation where the 3-4-3 formation is used to build an attack. The defenders pass the ball to the midfielders, who then attempt to link up with the attackers. If the ball is lost, the defending team tries to win possession and counter-attack.
Focus: Develop the players' ability to transition between attacking and defending roles, and to play effectively within the 3-4-3 formation during a match scenario.
