Instructions/Setup:

This practice takes place in a 30 by 40-yard area and focuses on developing finishing from different positions inside the box. We set up by placing three mannequins as shown in the session image and splitting players into two groups of three. One player from each group will work at a time in this competitive drill.

To begin, the coach will pass to the player who comes short to receive the ball and then plays a one-touch return. The player will then run backwards, receive a pass on the outside of a mannequin, drive forward, and finish past the goalkeeper. After the finish, the player must sprint back between the two mannequins before receiving a pass from their outside teammate and finishing on one touch. After each player has had their two shots, the team with the most goals wins.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick decision-making – Players should focus on making quick decisions to receive and return the ball with one or two touches. This helps to develop the speed of play and decision-making under pressure.

• Finishing accuracy – Emphasize finishing with accuracy, not power. Players should focus on placing the ball in the corners of the goal, rather than blasting it.

• Timing of the run – Encourage players to time their movements well when receiving passes around the mannequins. The runs should be sharp and direct to maximize the chance of getting a clean shot on goal.

• Movement off the ball – Stress the importance of quick movement off the ball to create space for receiving passes and to support the attacking play. Players should be ready to adjust their positioning based on where the ball is and where the defenders are.

Progression 1: Add a Defender

Introduce a defender who can challenge the attacking player after they have received the pass around the mannequin. This will increase the intensity and add a layer of defensive pressure to the practice.

Focus: Improve decision-making under pressure and the ability to finish with a defender closing in on the shot.

Progression 2: Increase the Number of Shots

Allow each player to take three or four shots instead of just two. This increases the opportunity for players to practice different types of finishes, such as volleys, driven shots, and calm side-foot finishes.

Focus: Enhance composure in front of goal and improve finishing techniques under varying scenarios.
