Instructions/Setup:
This practice takes place in a 25 by 30-yard area and focuses on developing players' first-time finishing in the box. Set up two teams, with one goalkeeper in goal and the other players positioned outside the penalty area, ready to receive crosses. The coach plays balls into the box from various angles, and players must finish first time, aiming for accuracy and power.
The practice begins with a coach delivering a cross from either side of the field. The player in the box must adjust their body shape and finish the ball with one touch, aiming to score. After each shot, players quickly reset and prepare for the next cross.
To add a competitive element, coaches can instruct players to keep score, with the player scoring the most goals receiving a reward. This adds extra motivation and intensity to the practice.
Coaching Notes:
• First-time technique – Emphasize the importance of technique when finishing first time. Players should focus on striking the ball cleanly with the correct part of the foot (inside, instep, or laces) depending on the situation.
• Body positioning – Players must position themselves well to anticipate the ball and be ready to strike. Encourage a strong, balanced stance, with the non-kicking foot placed next to the ball for better control and power.
• Anticipation and timing – Players should anticipate the delivery of the ball and time their runs accordingly, ensuring they are in the right position to receive and finish in one touch.
• Accuracy over power – While power is important, accuracy should take priority. Encourage players to focus on placing the ball in the corners of the goal or targeting specific areas, rather than just blasting the ball.
Progression 1: Vary the Crosses
Vary the types of crosses being delivered (low, driven, lofted) and encourage players to adapt their finishing technique to suit each type. Players should be able to control the ball with their first touch or adjust their shot depending on the delivery.
Focus: Improve players' adaptability and ability to finish first time with different types of crosses.
Progression 2: Add Defensive Pressure
Introduce a defender or two into the practice, making it more game-realistic. Defenders will look to block or challenge the players finishing in the box, requiring attackers to maintain composure under pressure.
Focus: Enhance the players' ability to finish first time while under pressure, improving their composure in match situations.
