Instructions/Setup:

This practice takes place in a 30 by 35-yard area and focuses on developing players' counter-attacking, speed, and reactions when in an overload scenario. The setup involves two sets of three attackers and two defenders on one side, with a goal and goalkeeper at each end and a coach positioned in one corner of the area.

We begin with the goalkeeper playing a direct ball out to the coach in the corner, triggering the start of the attack. Three attackers and two defenders sprint to attack the area, with one wide player receiving the set back from the coach to deliver into the box. Once the attack is finished or breaks down, the goalkeeper will receive a ball and trigger a 3v2 counter in the opposite direction.

Coaching Notes:

• Focus on the quick transition from defense to attack when the ball is played out by the goalkeeper. Players should react immediately and sprint to support the attack.

• Encourage wide players to deliver accurate crosses into the box with pace, ensuring attackers are positioned well to finish.

• The attackers should look to combine effectively and exploit the overload situation, using smart runs to break down the defense.

• Defenders must react quickly to prevent the counter-attack from reaching the box, while attackers need to be alert and sharp in exploiting the overload.

Progression 1: Add a Defender

Introduce an additional defender into the attacking team, creating a more challenging overload scenario. This forces attackers to be more precise with their movements and passing.

Focus: Decision-making under pressure, ensuring attackers are still able to exploit space effectively.

Progression 2: Increase the Distance of the Goalkeeper’s Pass

Extend the distance the goalkeeper must play the ball, requiring attackers to adjust their positioning and timing. This progression focuses on the players' ability to read and react to longer balls.

Focus: Speed in transition and precision in timing and positioning.
