Instructions/Setup:

This practice takes place in a 45 by 50-yard area and focuses on developing players’ ability to win possession and support a quick counterattack. We set up by splitting players into three teams of four, with two teams starting on the outside of the rondo zone and two defenders positioned in the middle, aiming to win possession.

The two other teammates start at the outside shuttle run stations, performing this exercise until their teammates win possession. Once possession is won, the objective is to play a pass out wide through either of the two gates for one of the wide players to run onto and deliver into the box, where a 2v1 situation will occur. After the attack ends, the teams will switch roles.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick transition to attack – When possession is won, encourage players to transition immediately and look for the pass out wide. Speed in moving from defense to attack is crucial.

• Support for the wide players – The wide players should focus on making runs into the space as soon as the ball is played out to them. The supporting players must also read the situation and offer options to help them deliver the ball.

• Efficient passing – Passes must be precise and timely, especially when playing through the gates to the wide players. Timing is key in ensuring the wide player can get to the ball and deliver into the box.

• Defending under pressure – The defenders should focus on closing down space and applying pressure to prevent the attackers from quickly setting up the counter. They must be aware of the gates and act fast to win possession.

Progression 1: Add More Defenders

Introduce a second defender in the middle of the rondo zone to increase the challenge for the attacking team. This progression will force the attackers to move the ball faster and work on creating space under pressure.

Focus: Improve decision-making and passing accuracy under pressure, as well as the ability to create space and maintain possession in tight situations.

Progression 2: Limit Touches

Limit players to one or two touches in the rondo area. This will speed up the decision-making process and encourage faster play in both attack and defense.

Focus: Enhance passing speed, decision-making, and ability to execute a quick counterattack with fewer touches.
