Instructions/Setup:

This rondo is designed to develop quick switches of play, encouraging fast decision-making and ball circulation. Play starts as a 4v2 rondo on one side of the pitch, and after a set number of passes, the possession team can switch play through the central player positioned between the rondo grids. The focus is on maintaining possession while working the ball into an advantageous position for a switch.

Players must transition quickly to the opposite grid to ensure there’s always a 4v2, as the opposite zone initially starts with just a 2v1. This means that after the switch, two attackers and one defender must move across to balance the numbers in the new grid.

Coaching Notes:

• Fast Ball Circulation: Encourage players to move the ball quickly to stretch the defenders and create passing lanes. The possession team should focus on making fast, accurate passes to maintain control and set up for the switch.

• Timing the Switch: The switch of play should be well-timed to catch the defenders off guard. Players must look for the right moment to switch once they’ve achieved sufficient control on the initial side. The central player should make an early pass to start the transition.

• Transitioning Quickly: Once the switch is made, players must quickly move across to ensure a numerical advantage. The attackers should be alert and sprint to the new grid, while the defenders should track their movement.

• Communication: Effective communication is vital to coordinate the switch and ensure everyone is in position to maintain possession. Players should use verbal and non-verbal cues to indicate when to switch.

Progression 1: Add a Third Defender:

Introduce a third defender into the rondo. The additional defender increases the pressure on the possession team and forces them to make faster decisions and work harder to maintain possession and complete the switch.

Focus: This progression challenges the possession team to deal with more defensive pressure while maintaining quick ball movement and effective switches.
