Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 20x20

  • This practice is a 5v3 possession and counter attack drill designed to develop patient build-up play and reactive counter pressing. The team in possession must aim to complete ‘x’ number of passes to score 1 point, while the 3 defending players try to regain possession and break quickly into any of the 4 mini goals located around the grid.

To replicate realistic transitions, the 2 end line players (from the team in possession) are allowed to enter the central zone immediately after a turnover. This simulates a quick counter press — turning what begins as a 3v1 counter attack into a 3v3, forcing players to react quickly in both offensive and defensive moments.

  • • Controlled Build-Up: Encourage patience in possession, using support from the end line players to recycle play. Players should constantly move and scan for passing lanes, aiming to keep the ball circulating with minimal touches.

    • Counter Pressing Reaction: Upon losing possession, players must react immediately to close down the ball and block passing lanes. Emphasize urgency, teamwork, and communication to restore balance and delay the counter.

    • Transition Speed: Focus on how quickly the defending team can counter once possession is won. Players should attack with pace and directness, aiming to reach the mini goals before the press recovers.

    • Use of Support Players: The end line players must stay alert and read the game. Their movement and positioning after a turnover are vital to restoring shape or supporting the press.

  • Add Touch Limit for End Players:

Limit the end line players to one or two touches to increase speed of play and decision-making. This encourages quick movement off the ball and sharper passing.

Focus: Improves tempo of possession and sharpens reactions during build-up and transitions.

  • Bonus Goal on First-Time Finish:

If the counter-attacking team scores from a first-time finish, award an extra point. This encourages quick execution and decision-making in front of goal.

Focus: Adds realism to counter attacks by encouraging fast, instinctive play in final third moments.
