Instructions/Setup:

This finishing practice uses a Y-shaped setup with four stations. The drill begins with the initial player playing an up-back-and-through combination to one of the two tips of the Y. The second station player will then spin around and finish off a set pass from one of the higher players. After each finish, players rotate through the stations to maintain a high intensity and maximize repetitions.

This practice focuses on improving quick decision-making, movement off the ball, and finishing under pressure in dynamic situations.

Coaching Notes:

• Up-Back-and-Through Combination: Players should focus on precise passing and timing during the up-back-and-through sequence. Encourage the player receiving the ball to make a quick and accurate first touch to set up the next phase of the play.

• Quick Movement and Spin: The second station player must react quickly, spinning around to receive the ball and finishing efficiently. Focus on proper body positioning to receive the ball in stride and execute a clean finish.

• Finishing Technique: Players should focus on composure in front of goal, aiming to finish with accuracy and control. Encourage different types of finishes, such as placing the ball in the corners or using the inside of the foot to ensure precision.

• Rotation and Intensity: Players should rotate quickly between stations, maintaining a high tempo to simulate match-like conditions. Stress the importance of constant movement and staying engaged throughout the practice.

Progression 1: Add Defenders for Pressure:

Introduce a passive defender in the final phase to add pressure to the shooter. This will force the player finishing to make quicker decisions and adjust their shot based on the defensive pressure.

Focus: Increases decision-making speed and finishing under pressure.

Progression 2: Limit Touches for Finishing:

Limit the number of touches each player can take when finishing. For example, each player may only be allowed two touches: one to control the ball and the second to finish. This encourages quicker reactions and sharper finishing techniques.

Focus: Encourages quicker, more decisive finishes and improves ball control under time constraints.
