Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 4 | Pitch size: 30x30
In this drill, players work on their 1v1 attacking and defending skills with the added challenge of multiple goals to target. The play begins with a pass from the defender to the attacker, who then has the task of attacking 1v1 and attempting to dribble through one of the two black gates positioned on opposite sides of the square.
The defender’s main objective is to stop the attacker from scoring while also having the option to switch to the offensive role by attempting to dribble through the other two gates if they regain possession cleanly. This drill promotes both attacking creativity and defensive resilience, while encouraging players to think quickly and transition between roles.
• Attacker's Approach: Encourage the attacker to use a variety of dribbling techniques to beat the defender, such as feints, changes of pace, and quick directional changes. The focus is on driving forward and exploiting gaps in the defense.
• Defender's Positioning: Defenders should focus on staying goal-side of the attacker and forcing them toward one side of the grid. Encourage defenders to remain patient and not dive into tackles prematurely, allowing the attacker to make the first move.
• Gate Awareness: Both players should keep the gates in mind, with attackers aiming to use the gates as quick exit points and defenders working to anticipate the attacker’s movement toward them.
• Transitioning Quickly: If the defender wins the ball, they should immediately transition into the attacking role, looking for the quickest route to score by dribbling through one of the two gates. This transition is key to improving their ability to shift between attacking and defending.
Increase the Number of Defenders:
Add a second defender into the drill, creating a 2v1 scenario for the attacker. The attacker must now navigate through more defensive pressure while still trying to use the gates to score.
Focus: Increases the challenge for the attacker, requiring better ball control, decision-making, and the ability to handle multiple defenders.
Add a Time Limit:
Introduce a time limit (e.g., 30 seconds) for each phase of the drill. The attacker must attempt to score within this time, while the defender must defend within the time frame as well.
Focus: Promotes faster decision-making and increased urgency in both attacking and defending situations, simulating more game-like pressure.
