Half Pitch

Instructions/Setup:

This practice is focused on developing forward attacking play in a 4-3-3 formation, specifically working on combinations between the front three players. The area is set up with cones or markers to define zones and provide structure for the attacking patterns.

In this drill, the front three players—left winger, right winger, and central striker—will work together to combine and create attacking opportunities. They will use passing, movement, and off-the-ball runs to break down the defense and create scoring chances.

Coaching Notes:

• Passing accuracy and timing – The key to successful combinations is accurate passing at the right time. Players should be focused on delivering crisp, precise passes to their teammates.

• Movement off the ball – The front three should move intelligently to create space and passing lanes. Encourage the wingers to cut inside or make overlapping runs, while the striker should constantly look to link up play and make runs behind the defense.

• Quick 1-2 combinations – Emphasize the use of quick 1-2 passes (give-and-go) between the front three players to open up space and create opportunities in and around the penalty box.

• Positioning and spacing – The front three should maintain proper spacing to stretch the defense and allow for fluid combinations. Avoid bunching up in the same area; instead, create width and depth to provide options for passing.

• Support and support angles – The players should constantly provide support to one another by moving into space to create passing options. This ensures that there are always available outlets for the ball carrier.

Progression 1: Introduce Defenders

Add one or two defenders to the practice to increase the intensity and challenge the attacking players to make quicker decisions. The defenders should be passive at first, but as they become more active, the attacking players will need to focus more on their combinations under pressure.

Focus: Improve quick decision-making and passing accuracy under pressure, while continuing to work on attacking patterns.

Progression 2: Add a Goalkeeper and Finish

Introduce a goalkeeper to the drill and require the front three players to complete the attacking sequence with a shot on goal. This will encourage them to focus not only on the build-up and combinations but also on finishing the attack.

Focus: Enhance composure and finishing ability in attacking situations, while continuing to work on the fluidity and timing of the attacking combinations.
