Instructions/Setup:
This practice takes place in a 15 by 25-yard area and focuses on developing set and spin passing combinations. Players will work in pairs or small groups, performing a series of short passes using the set and spin technique. The player receiving the ball will “set” the ball back into their partner's path and then immediately spin off to receive the next pass. The focus is on quick, sharp movements, and maintaining good passing accuracy during the combination.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing accuracy – Ensure players are making clean, accurate passes, particularly when setting the ball for the spin.
• Quick turn – Emphasize the importance of quick and explosive spins after setting the ball to maintain fluidity in the combination.
• Timing – Players should time their movements to anticipate the next pass and react quickly to maintain the rhythm of the drill.
• Body position – Players should always stay on their toes and maintain a good body position to facilitate smooth turns and quick changes of direction.
Progression 1: Increase the Distance
Increase the distance between players, requiring more precise passing and better timing for the set and spin to stay effective.
Focus: Develop longer-range passing accuracy and better movement over a greater distance.
Progression 2: Add Pressure
Introduce a defender to apply light pressure after the set, forcing the receiving player to spin and control the ball quickly under pressure.
Focus: Improve players' ability to execute the set and spin combinations when facing opposition pressure.
