Instructions/Setup:
This small-sided game (SSG) takes place in a 30 by 30-yard area and focuses on developing quick decision-making, passing accuracy, and movement off the ball. Set up two teams, each with two inside players and two outside players. The inside players pass to the outside players, who take the ball into the field of play with their first touch. Goals scored by the outside players, or directly after a pass from them, count double. Inside players can also score, but their goals count normally. After making a pass to the outside player, the passer switches to the outside. This encourages fluid movement and quick transitions between roles.
Coaching Notes:
• First touch control – Emphasize the importance of taking the ball under control with the first touch when the outside player receives the pass. This helps set up the next move and maintains possession under pressure.
• Movement off the ball – Encourage inside players to move quickly and support the ball carrier by offering passing options. Timing their runs is crucial to creating space for the pass and providing a potential finishing opportunity.
• Quick transitions – Players must switch quickly from one role to another. After passing to the outside, players should be alert and ready to receive the ball or create space for a new attack.
• Passing accuracy and timing – Focus on passing with precision and timing to ensure the ball reaches the intended recipient effectively. Encourage players to make well-weighted passes to help the team maintain control and build their attacks efficiently.
Progression 1: Add a Defender
Introduce one or two defenders to increase the challenge for the attacking team. The defenders must work to break up the passing sequences and prevent the ball from reaching the outside players, forcing the attacking team to be quicker and more precise with their passing and movement.
Focus: Improve decision-making under pressure and the ability to execute passes and movements efficiently in tight situations, fostering quick thinking and teamwork.
Progression 2: Add a Time Limit for Scoring
Impose a time limit on the attacking team to score after the pass to the outside player. This encourages players to make faster decisions and movements to increase the intensity of the drill, pushing them to execute under time pressure.
Focus: Increase the speed of decision-making and movement, encouraging players to focus on quick attacking transitions and the ability to score in a shorter time frame.
