Instructions/Setup:
This practice takes place in a 40 by 30-yard area and focuses on improving ball possession, quick passing, positioning under pressure, and decision-making. Set up two teams: a 7-player team (yellow) and a 3-player team (defenders). The attacking team (yellow) must maintain possession and complete 8 consecutive passes to score 1 goal. The defensive team (3 players) must work together to press and win possession. If the defenders win the ball, they must transition quickly and score in the mini-goals set up at either end of the area. Encourage the attacking team to use quick passing, movement off the ball, and communication to maintain possession under pressure.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick passing and movement – Emphasize the importance of playing quick, accurate passes to maintain possession under pressure. Players should always move off the ball to create passing options and maintain the flow of the game.
• Positioning and awareness – Players on the attacking team must position themselves to support the ball carrier, providing multiple passing lanes. Awareness of both the ball and teammates is key for successful possession.
• Pressing and defensive organization – Encourage the defending team to stay compact and press the ball effectively. Defenders should work together to limit passing options and force mistakes from the attacking team. Timing their tackles and interceptions is crucial.
• Transition play – Once the defensive team wins the ball, they should immediately transition to attack and aim to score in the mini-goals. Encourage them to exploit the space quickly and finish efficiently.
Progression 1: Add a Time Limit
Introduce a time limit (e.g., 30 seconds) for the attacking team to complete their 8 consecutive passes. This forces the attacking team to play faster and more efficiently while maintaining possession under pressure.
Focus: Improve the attacking team’s ability to complete passes quickly under time constraints, while developing the defenders' ability to press effectively and force turnovers.
Progression 2: Restrict Passing Range
Limit the range of passing for the attacking team by introducing specific zones or areas where passes can be made. This adds an extra challenge for the attacking players and forces them to work on short, quick passes while under defensive pressure.
Focus: Increase the technical difficulty for the attacking team by restricting the passing range, encouraging more precise and controlled passes in tight spaces. The defenders will also have to adjust to the new limitations in their pressing strategy.
