Instructions/Setup:
This practice takes place in a 40 by 40-yard area and focuses on possession and transition play. Set up two teams: one with 6 players (attacking) and the other with 4 players (defending). The attacking team aims to complete 5 successful passes to trigger a switch of play, using the corner players to change the direction of the attack. Every successful switch of play counts as 1 goal. The defending team works to win the ball back and, if they succeed, they can immediately transition to attack and attempt to score in the small goals placed at each end. Encourage quick ball movement, awareness of space, and rapid transitions between defense and attack.
Coaching Notes:
• Pass Completion – Emphasize the importance of quick, accurate passing to achieve the 5 successful passes. Players should focus on maintaining possession while looking for opportunities to switch the play effectively.
• Switching Play – The switch of play should be executed quickly and with precision. Encourage players to use the corner players to stretch the defense and create space in the opposite area.
• Transition from Defense to Attack – When the defenders win the ball, they should look to immediately counter-attack by playing directly towards the small goals. Stress the importance of quickly transitioning from defense to attack to capitalize on the disorganization of the opposing team.
• Positional Awareness – Players should always be aware of their positions and the positioning of their teammates. Proper positioning allows for better passing lanes, support, and quicker transitions, especially when switching play or moving into attack.
Progression 1: Limit Touches
Limit the number of touches players can take (e.g., no more than two touches). This encourages quicker decision-making, faster passing, and sharper transitions.
Focus: Increase the speed of play and reduce unnecessary touches, encouraging fluid transitions between possession and counter-attacking.
Progression 2: Add a Defender in the Corner
Introduce a neutral defender into the corner area where the ball is being switched. This adds pressure on the attackers to make the switch more precise and quicker under defensive pressure.
Focus: Improve decision-making and passing under pressure while maintaining the speed and accuracy of switches to create attacking opportunities.
