Instructions/Setup:
This practice focuses on developing the ability to switch the point of attack quickly and efficiently. Set up two rondos (5-yard diameter circles) facing each other, one with 4 players and the other with 2 defenders. In the first rondo, the attacking team must maintain possession while the defenders work to press and win the ball. The key is to switch the ball quickly across to the opposite rondo by having one player from the 4v2 drop off to receive the ball, before switching the play to the other rondo. To progress, once the switch is made, allow the players to break out and deliver a cross to a target player in the opposite half.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick Decision Making – Players must make quick decisions on when and where to switch the ball. Encourage them to recognize the moment when it is most effective to move the ball across to the other rondo.
• Body Positioning – Ensure that players use good body positioning when receiving the ball, opening up to see the entire field and be prepared to switch the point of attack quickly.
• Pass Accuracy – The switch pass must be accurate and well-timed, ensuring that the ball reaches the intended target on the opposite side of the rondo without giving the defenders an opportunity to intercept.
• Movement to Support – Players should constantly move to provide options for the ball carrier, ensuring there is always someone available to receive and switch the play. Good off-the-ball movement is essential for maintaining possession and switching effectively.
Progression 1: Add a Cross After the Switch
Once the switch has been made, allow the players to break out of the rondos and deliver a cross into the box. A target player should be positioned to finish the cross. This progression simulates a real game situation where after switching the attack, a cross is delivered into the opponent's box for a goal-scoring opportunity.
Focus: Improve the ability to switch play and create attacking opportunities with a well-timed cross after the switch.
Progression 2: Introduce Defenders in the Receiving Rondo
Introduce a defender in the receiving rondo (4v2 with 1 defender in the receiving circle). The attacking team must still execute the switch, but now the receiving rondo must break out from defensive pressure, making the switch more challenging and encouraging quicker decision-making under pressure.
Focus: Improve decision-making and passing accuracy under defensive pressure while executing a successful switch.
