Instructions/Setup:

This practice focuses on creating space away from an opponent, passing and receiving with directional control, and making incisive movements in a micro-game situation. Set up several small zones (or stations) that simulate real-game scenarios where players must create space to receive the ball, pass accurately, and move quickly. Players will work through different elements in each station, such as receiving the ball under pressure, performing sharp directional turns, and executing quick, accurate passes. The circuit can involve both attacking and defending movements, with players rotating through various positions to simulate both offensive and defensive roles.

Coaching Notes:

• Creating Space – Encourage players to use body positioning to create space away from defenders. Emphasize the importance of making intelligent runs to receive the ball in areas where they can turn and progress play quickly.

• Directional Control and First Touch – Focus on players’ ability to control the ball in a way that allows them to move forward or change direction immediately. The first touch should always set up the next action, whether it's a pass or a dribble.

• Incisive Movement – Players should focus on sharp, purposeful movements to break away from defenders and create passing options. Encourage them to use their peripheral vision to scan for space and anticipate passes.

• Quick Passing and Decision-Making – The success of this practice depends on quick, accurate passes. Encourage players to make decisions rapidly while maintaining control, ensuring that the flow of the game remains fast and effective.

Progression 1: Add Defensive Pressure

Introduce a defender into each zone who can apply pressure on the player with the ball. This will force the attacking player to make quicker decisions, improving their ability to create space and pass under pressure.

Focus: Improve passing accuracy and movement while under pressure from defenders, requiring quick thinking and adaptation to defensive pressure.

Progression 2: Increase the Complexity of Movement

Add more specific movements to each zone, such as running to a specific cone or making a timed overlap. This increases the complexity of the practice and adds more tactical elements for the players to master.

Focus: Enhance the players’ ability to follow complex movement patterns while maintaining control of the ball, improving their understanding of off-the-ball positioning and support play.
