Instructions/Setup:
The practice begins with a 4v2 rondo inside a central grid. The 4 players in possession must retain the ball, completing a set number of passes. If the 2 defensive players win possession, the 4 outside players become live, and a 6v4 is played out inside a larger grid. The attacking team must then look to create space and progress the ball through the larger grid to maintain possession and look for scoring opportunities, while the defending team aims to regain possession.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick Passing and Movement – Encourage the players in possession to move the ball quickly and look for angles to break through the defensive lines. Quick, one-touch passing, and movement off the ball are key to maintaining possession and progressing the ball through the grid.
• Defensive Awareness – The defenders should focus on pressuring the ball while maintaining their defensive shape. They should work together to trap the ball and create turnovers, making sure they cover passing lanes and anticipate where the ball will go next.
• Transition Play – Once possession is won, the transition from defense to attack must be fast and decisive. The defending players who win possession must immediately look to exploit the larger grid by transitioning quickly to create a numerical advantage and put pressure on the opposing team.
• Communication and Spatial Awareness – Both attacking and defending teams must communicate constantly to adjust positioning and respond to changes in the play. Players should be aware of their teammates’ positioning and always be looking for open spaces to receive or distribute the ball.
Progression 1: Increase the Number of Defenders
Increase the number of defenders in the central grid to make it more difficult for the attacking team to retain possession. This will force the attackers to play with greater precision and increase the intensity of the practice.
Focus:
Improves the ability to retain possession under pressure and develop quick decision-making in tight spaces.
Progression 2: Limit the Number of Touches
Limit the number of touches the players can take while in possession. This will force them to move the ball quicker, increasing the tempo and requiring more precise passes and movement.
Focus:
Enhances passing speed and decision-making in high-pressure situations, encouraging players to think and act quickly.
