Instructions/Setup:
This skill practice focuses on refining combination play and 2v2 attacking situations. Set up a 30x30-yard area with two small goals at either end. Divide the players into pairs, and designate one pair as attackers and the other as defenders. The attacking team will attempt to score by working together with passes, overlapping runs, and quick combinations, while the defending team will focus on stopping the attack and regaining possession.
The attacking pair can use various combinations such as 1-2 passes, wall passes, and give-and-go to break through the defensive line. The defenders will work together to close down passing lanes, pressure the ball, and attempt to win possession without committing fouls.
The focus of this practice is to improve the players' ability to execute quick combinations in tight spaces and to develop effective attacking movements in 2v2 situations.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick combinations in tight spaces – Encourage attackers to use quick 1-2 passes and wall passes to break through the defense. The players should focus on making runs off the ball to create passing options and space.
• Movement off the ball – Emphasize the importance of attacking players moving into space to receive the ball. The players should not stand still but should make diagonal or forward runs to stretch the defense and create passing lanes.
• Defensive positioning and pressure – Defenders should work together to close down passing lanes and force the attacking players to play into crowded areas. The defenders need to focus on maintaining good positioning, using their bodies to block the ball, and applying pressure without being overly aggressive.
• Timing of runs and passes – Encourage attackers to time their runs and passes effectively, ensuring they are moving in sync with each other. The passer should make the ball available at the right time for the runner to receive and continue the attack.
• Decision-making under pressure – Both attackers and defenders should be encouraged to make quick decisions. Attackers need to decide whether to pass, shoot, or continue the dribble based on the defensive pressure. Defenders need to decide when to step forward to press and when to stay back to block passing lanes.
Progression 1: Add Neutral Player
Introduce a neutral player who can play for the attacking team. This neutral player can provide an additional passing option, making it easier for the attackers to combine and create chances. The neutral player should be positioned in the middle of the playing area, encouraging fluid attacking combinations.
Focus: Improve combination play and passing under pressure by adding an extra passing option.
Progression 2: Increase Defensive Pressure
Add an additional defender or make the defending team play a 3v2 situation. The attacking team will need to adapt to the increased defensive pressure, using quicker combinations and smarter movements to break through.
Focus: Develop the attackers' ability to handle pressure in a 2v2 situation, focusing on speed, timing, and decision-making when facing multiple defenders.
