Instructions/Setup:
This technical passing practice takes place in a 20 by 20-yard area and focuses on developing quick and accurate passing combinations between players. The drill encourages players to work on their passing accuracy using one or two touches, while also focusing on the timing of their movements to receive passes. The objective is for players to pass the ball in quick succession, with runners receiving passes without breaking their stride. Communication is essential as players work to maintain fluidity and consistency in their passes and movement.
As players become more comfortable with the pattern, they should increase the speed of their passes, especially when playing into central players. The drill helps players improve their overall passing technique, movement off the ball, and ability to quickly transition between attacking and defensive roles in small spaces.
Coaching Notes:
• Focus on passing quality – Players should strive to pass the ball with precision, using one or two touches depending on the situation, to maintain the flow of the drill.
• Increase pass speed – Encourage players to pass the ball quickly, especially when playing into central players, to keep the intensity of the drill high and simulate match conditions.
• Weight of sets – Emphasize the importance of setting up passes with the correct weight so that runners can receive them without having to adjust their stride, maintaining the rhythm.
• Encourage communication – Stress the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication between players, ensuring everyone is aware of the passes and the movement of the ball.
Progression 1: Add a Passive Defender
Introduce a passive defender into the drill to put pressure on the attacking players as they pass and move. The defender can attempt to intercept passes or limit the options of the attacking players, forcing them to make quicker decisions and passes.
Focus: Improve decision-making under pressure and passing accuracy while being defended.
Progression 2: Increase the Size of the Area
Expand the playing area to 25 by 25 yards to increase the distance between players. This will challenge players' passing accuracy over longer distances and their ability to adjust to a larger space.
Focus: Improve passing accuracy and movement over greater distances, enhancing spatial awareness.
