Instructions/Setup:
This small-sided game takes place in a 30x20 playing area and is focused on 1v1 competitive duels within a team setting to encourage competition and defensive principles. The area is divided into four squares, each with a 1v1 matchup.
Each team will be responsible for their individual duels within these squares. The objective is for each player to focus on winning their individual duel, allowing the team to regain possession and create scoring opportunities. Teams can make use of their goalkeeper to assist in transitions and help maintain possession.
The game encourages players to create space within their square, working on passing, receiving, and finishing opportunities. Players are encouraged to be aggressive in their duels, maintaining defensive discipline and applying pressure to force their opponent into mistakes or poor decisions.
Coaching Notes:
• 1v1 competition – Encourage players to focus on winning their individual duels. Defenders should apply pressure and force their opponent into a specific direction, while attackers should look to create space and take on defenders confidently.
• Communication – Ensure players are communicating with their teammates about defensive responsibilities and when to press or drop off. This helps maintain defensive organization and allows for quicker transitions.
• Movement and spacing – Encourage attackers to make runs to receive passes in good positions, while defenders should focus on staying goal-side and forcing their opponents into less threatening areas.
• Quick transitions – Once possession is won, players should look to quickly transition into attack, making use of the available space to create goal-scoring chances.
Progression 1: Limit Time on the Ball
Introduce a time limit (e.g., 5-10 seconds) for each player to hold onto the ball within their square. This forces quicker decision-making and ensures the game remains fast-paced.
Focus: Improve players' ability to make quick decisions and execute passes or shots under time pressure.
Progression 2: Introduce a Second Defender
Add a second defender in each square, turning the 1v1 into a 2v1 for the attacking player. The attacking team now has to focus on creating space and combining with teammates to break down the defense.
Focus: Develop attacking players' ability to work together and break down more compact defenses, using quick passing and movement.
