Instructions/Setup:
This drill focuses on encouraging players to make dynamic forward runs into the box, specifically targeting midfielders and opposite wingers. Play begins with a 4v2 setup in a deeper position, where the team in possession is tasked with progressing the ball and playing a forward pass into the central player, who is positioned between the lines.
Once the central player receives the ball, they then play a pass to one of the wide players. This pass triggers the movement of the midfielder and the opposite winger, both of whom make forward runs into the box to create attacking options. The goal is to quickly overload the box and create goal-scoring opportunities.
Coaching Notes:
• Timing of Runs: Emphasize the importance of timing when making forward runs. Midfielders and wingers must time their movements well, ensuring they enter the box at the right moment to receive the ball and create space for themselves.
• Quick Decision-Making: The central player must make quick decisions when receiving the ball, playing an accurate pass into the wide player, and quickly recognizing when to trigger the forward runs from the midfield and opposite winger.
• Creating Overloads in the Box: The forward runs from the midfielder and winger should aim to create a numerical advantage in the box. This requires players to be aware of the defenders' positions and adjust their runs to maximize the attacking threat.
• Off-the-Ball Movement: Encourage wide players to move quickly into space after receiving the ball, looking for opportunities to cross or combine with the arriving runners. Off-the-ball movement should be fluid and decisive, as timing is crucial to breaking down defensive lines.
