Instructions/Setup:

This practice takes place on half a pitch and is divided into three areas, each measuring 15 by 10 yards. In the deeper areas, a 2v1 setup represents the central midfielders and fullbacks against an opposition midfielder. In the advanced area, a single striker faces off against a single defender, with wide players positioned in each channel. The attacking team must move the ball through each area, making passes and creating opportunities to release a wide player. The aim is to create a 3v1 overload in the box, with the striker, opposite wide player, and a midfielder runner working together to score from a cross. If the defending player wins possession, they can score in either of the mini-goals.

Coaching Notes:

• Passing accuracy – Ensure all passes between players in the build-up are sharp and precise, particularly when breaking through the midfield.

• Movement off the ball – Encourage wingers and midfielders to make runs into space, supporting the attack to create overloads in the box.

• Decision-making – Players should be decisive about when to release the ball to create a numerical advantage and when to delay the pass for optimal timing.

• Composure in the box – Focus on the final product by encouraging attackers to remain composed when finishing from the cross.

Progression 1: Add Defenders to Midfield

Increase the pressure on the attacking team by adding additional defenders in the central midfield area to make the passing and movement more challenging.

Focus: Improve passing under pressure and making the right decisions in tight spaces.

Progression 2: Wide Players Work Under Pressure

Introduce defensive pressure on the wide players to improve their ability to create space and deliver accurate crosses under pressure.

Focus: Enhance the wide players' ability to beat defenders and deliver quality crosses into the box.
