Instructions/Setup:
This practice focuses on passing, receiving, and movement to create space. Players work on passing the ball to each other, receiving on the run, and making incisive off-the-ball movements to get into positions to receive passes or create goal-scoring opportunities. This exercise helps improve technical aspects such as first touch, step control, and movement to escape markers. The focus is on combining these elements in a dynamic environment, simulating game-like situations where players need to read the play, anticipate movement, and execute precise actions.
Coaching Notes:
• First Touch and Control – Encourage players to take a clean and controlled first touch that sets them up for their next move, ensuring they maintain possession and keep the ball moving forward.
• Movement off the Ball – Stress the importance of checking away from defenders to create space for receiving passes. Players should make sharp, well-timed runs to ensure they are available when needed.
• Receiving on the Run – Players should focus on receiving the ball while moving to maintain the flow of the play. Emphasize the need to position themselves to receive the ball in stride, keeping momentum.
• Off-the-Ball Runs – Encourage players to make decisive, well-timed runs that pull defenders out of position, creating options for themselves and teammates. The runs should be purposeful, helping to open passing lanes or goal-scoring chances.
Progression 1: Add Pressure from Defenders
Introduce a defender to add pressure, requiring the receiving player to adjust their first touch and decision-making under more challenging conditions. This will develop composure and awareness under pressure.
Focus: Develop the ability to receive the ball and maintain possession when under defensive pressure, while making quick decisions and precise movements.
Progression 2: Increase the Passing Distance
Extend the distance between players to encourage longer passes and more accurate control. This will work on players' ability to receive balls over longer distances while maintaining fluid movement and spacing.
Focus: Improve passing range, control over longer distances, and the timing of off-the-ball movements to facilitate effective play.
