Instructions/Setup:

This is a fun and competitive warm-up practice where teams will compete head-to-head. Players from opposite teams will take turns running around the poles and attempting to score a header into the goal. Once they've completed their attacking phase, they must quickly transition to become the goalkeeper and attempt to stop the header from the next opposition player. This exercise encourages both attacking and defending skills while keeping the players engaged.

Coaching Notes:

• Timing of Runs – Encourage players to time their runs well to meet the ball at the right moment for a successful header. The run should be dynamic, with players using their momentum to direct the ball into the goal.

• Accuracy over Power – Stress the importance of accuracy when heading the ball, rather than focusing solely on power. Players should aim for specific areas of the goal to increase their chances of scoring.

• Quick Transitions – Players must quickly switch from attacker to goalkeeper, so emphasize the importance of quick footwork and alertness when transitioning. This will help players stay sharp both in attack and defense.

• Goalkeeping Fundamentals – As goalkeepers, players should focus on positioning, anticipating the header, and being proactive in moving to the ball. They need to react quickly and be ready to make a save with both hands or using their head to deflect the ball if necessary.

Progression 1: Add a Second Phase to the Attack

Introduce a second attacking phase where players need to pass the ball to a teammate before they attempt to score a header, making the drill slightly more complex.

Focus: Improve teamwork and passing accuracy before the header, as well as decision-making on when to attempt a header.

Progression 2: Increase the Number of Defenders

Add another defender to challenge the attacking player. The defender should try to block the header or pressure the attacker to make the header more difficult.

Focus: Improve players’ ability to score under pressure and sharpen defensive skills in aerial duels.
