Instructions/Setup:
This practice focuses on fast-paced 2v1 situations and is perfect for use as a warm-up or arrival activity. Play starts with a pass into a deeper player, who then dribbles up the pitch and combines with a teammate to score into one of the mini goals. If the defending player wins possession, they can counter-attack to the opposite mini goals. Teams will take turns attacking, and the practice is timed and scored, with the team scoring the most goals being crowned the winner.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick Combination Play – The player in possession should focus on making quick, accurate passes to the teammate to create an opportunity in the 2v1. Timing the pass and movement will help break down the defender and create a goal-scoring chance.
• Movement off the Ball – The supporting player must anticipate the ball and position themselves in space to receive it. Good movement off the ball will stretch the defender, creating more space for a shot or further combination.
• Defending 2v1 – The defender should aim to delay the attackers' progress and force them into less dangerous areas. They should also focus on reading the play, anticipating the pass, and positioning themselves to cut off the most likely attacking options.
• Composure in Front of Goal – The attacking duo should focus on finishing with composure, whether that’s through quick one-touch finishes or taking an extra touch to get closer to goal. It’s important to stay calm and pick the best option in front of goal.
Progression 1: Add a Third Defender
Introduce a third defender after a set number of reps, making it a 2v2 for a short period before returning to the 2v1. This progression adds an element of unpredictability and forces attackers to make quick decisions.
Focus: Encourages attackers to adapt to changing situations and work together under pressure.
Progression 2: Add a Time Limit to Scoring
Place a time limit on each attacking phase. The attackers must score within the time limit or they lose possession, and the defenders gain a point for successfully stopping the attack.
Focus: Increases urgency and encourages quick thinking and fast play in both attacking and defending.
