England Breaking Lines
ADDED TO FAVOURITES

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 13 | Pitch size: 60x30
This drill focuses on breaking lines and progressing the ball through compact defensive structures using numerical superiority.
The setup consists of multiple vertical zones (typically 3 or 4), with 3 attacking players vs 2 defenders in each active zone. The aim is for the possession team to combine quickly and accurately to find forward passes that break into the next zone.
Once a pass is made into the next zone, two players from the current zone can travel with the ball to maintain the 3v2 overload in the next section. This simulates real-game scenarios where players must support progression and create superiority through movement and timing.
• Quick Ball Speed: Encourage sharp passing and tempo. The quicker the ball moves, the more likely gaps open in a compact 2-man block.
• Breaking Lines Criteria: Set clear expectations—passes must break two defenders, not just go sideways. Reward risk-taking and brave passes.
• Body Positioning: Players must constantly scan, receive side-on, and play on the half-turn to progress play efficiently.
Progression 1 : Add Recovery Defender on Transition:
Once the ball is played into the next zone, one defender from the previous zone recovers and joins to add some pressure to the ball.
Focus: Simulates defensive recovery runs and increases pressure on progression play.
