Vitesse Back 3 Build Up Patterns

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 50x40
This unopposed passing and movement drill is designed to replicate build-up patterns within a back 3 formation. The setup includes 8 stations, shaped to reflect typical positions of a back 3 and supporting midfielders/wing-backs, arranged in a mirrored pattern.
Two balls are active simultaneously, each starting at opposite ends of the grid and moving through the same passing sequence but in opposite directions. The practice is continuous and flows without the ball leaving the designated area.
The focus is on executing a variety of build-up patterns commonly used by teams operating with a back three—ranging from switches across the back line to vertical passes into midfield and wide overloads.
• Body Shape & Scanning: Players must open up and receive side-on, scanning the next passing option before the ball arrives.
• Tempo & Rhythm: Encourage a consistent tempo and clean technique with every pass and movement—timing and precision are key.
• Communication: Even though unopposed, demand clear communication, including verbal cues and hand gestures to mimic game-like build-up scenarios.
Add a Passive Pressing Trigger:
Introduce a floating passive defender who moves slowly within the grid to simulate light pressing pressure or passing lane denial.
Players must now scan, adjust angles, and play around the passive obstacle.
Focus: Develops awareness, angle creation, and subtle decision-making adjustments under minimal pressure.
