Instructions/Setup:
This practice begins with a 3v3 (+1 neutral) possession game in a central zone, where both teams compete to complete 5 consecutive passes. Once a team achieves this, they are allowed to play forward into one of their wide attackers positioned on their attacking end. The drill is directional—each team attacks opposite ends—mirroring realistic game scenarios.
Once the ball is played into the wide area, a 3v2 attacking phase is triggered. Additionally, one attacker and one defender from the central zone are encouraged to break out and join the play, turning it into a potential 4v3 situation. This transition moment adds realism and challenges players to react quickly in both attacking and defensive roles.
Coaching Notes:
• Retention with Purpose: Encourage quick, intelligent movement in the central zone. Players should aim to create space and maintain tempo, knowing their goal is to earn the opportunity to break out.
• Breaking Lines: When transitioning out of the central zone, players must look to break lines with decisive passes into the wide attacker.
• Transition Awareness: Once the ball is played forward, players must quickly recognize their new roles—whether it’s joining the attack or recovering to defend.
• Overload Decision-Making: In the 4v3 phase, attackers should use the overload intelligently, prioritizing quick combinations and exploiting numerical advantages.
Progression 1: Time Limit to Break Forward:
Once 5 passes are completed, give the team 5 seconds to break forward and find their wide attacker.
Focus: Increases urgency and reinforces speed of thought and execution in transition.
