Instructions/Setup:

This drill focuses on encouraging build-up play through the full backs,   using one-third of the pitch to simulate the build-up zone. The setup   includes two mini goals positioned on either side in the wide full back areas—one   mini goal faces straight down the line, and the other is angled inward to   represent a typical pass into midfield. These target goals reflect the two   most common passing options available to a full back: a pass down the line or   an angled ball inside.

The team in possession works to play out from the back, building through   their full backs to score into either of the two mini goals. The defending   team applies pressure high up the pitch. If they regain possession, they   immediately counter-attack toward a full-size central goal, simulating a   real-game turnover and transition moment.

Coaching Notes:

   • Full Back Decision-Making: Encourage full backs to scan before receiving   and decide whether to play wide down the line or inside based on the pressure   and teammate positioning.

   • Body Shape in Build-Up: Players should position themselves to receive in   a forward facing positiong, allowing forward momentum when playing through   the thirds.

   • Press Resistance: Teach the back line and midfielders to remain composed   under pressure and support the full backs with angles for short   combinations.

   • Counter-Pressing Reactions: When possession is lost, the build-up team   should instantly react to either win the ball back or delay the counter to   allow for recovery.

Progression 1: Central Dribble End Line Option (Lower Value):

Introduce a central end line directly opposite the build-up team's starting   area. If the build-up team is unable to play through the full backs, they can   now also score by dribbling across this central end line. However, this   option is worth fewer points than scoring into the mini goals in the wide   areas.

Focus: Offers a secondary solution while reinforcing that the primary   objective remains playing through the full backs. This encourages players to   scan for wide options first but rewards intelligent recognition of space   centrally if the wide lanes are blocked.
