Instructions/Setup:
This technical mastery drill focuses on sharp one-touch passing and close control using both feet. One player moves laterally through a series of five cones spaced one yard apart, while the other acts as a stationary server from a fixed central position.
As the working player navigates through the cones, they play a short one-touch return pass with the server at each cone—alternating feet as they move. The emphasis is on rhythm, clean touches, and quick footwork, simulating tight-space play and improving touch consistency under time and spatial pressure.
Coaching Notes:
• Footwork & Body Shape: Players should stay light on their feet, keeping a low center of gravity and adjusting body position to control the ball efficiently off both feet.
• One-Touch Quality: Each pass should be clean and controlled—encourage players to find a rhythm and maintain accuracy even as fatigue sets in.
• Awareness of Cone Position: Players should keep their eyes up between passes to navigate the cones without relying solely on peripheral vision.
• Consistency Over Speed: Prioritize the quality of execution first, then gradually increase tempo as technique improves.
Progression 1: Opposite Foot Only:
The receiving player must alternate playing every ball with their non-dominant foot.
Focus: Builds confidence, coordination, and reliability on the weaker side.
Progression 2: Add a Trigger Cue:
The server shouts either “left” or “right” just before the pass, and the receiver must react and use the correct foot.
Focus: Develops listening, cognitive reaction, and decision-making under pressure.
