Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 13 | Pitch size: 30x40
This advanced positional rondo is set across two vertically aligned zones, with 2 defenders in each zone. The team in possession is shaped in a 4-2-3-1 formation, minus the striker.
A mannequin is placed between the two center backs to discourage square passes across the back line, which are often pressing triggers in real-game scenarios. Instead, players must find angles and disguise to play forward or diagonally.
From the deeper midfield line (the "2" in 4-2-3-1), one player is allowed to enter the active grid as a pivot, creating overloads and supporting circulation. The focus is on clean positioning, timing, and purposeful possession.
• Positional Awareness: Players must hold realistic positions to reflect their roles in a real 4-2-3-1 shape. Encourage correct distances and angles.
• Avoiding Pressing Triggers: The mannequin acts as a visual cue to discourage predictable square passes—promote disguised passes or bounces instead.
• Pivot Player Timing: The supporting midfielder should time their movement into the zone to receive under minimal pressure and help connect lines.
• Scanning & Body Shape: Constant scanning is key. Players should receive side-on and prepare for their next action before the ball arrives.
• Tempo & Rhythm of Play: The ball should move quickly but under control. Sharp passing with minimal unnecessary touches maintains intensity and realism.
Live Press from Both Zones:
Allow one defender from the opposite zone to press after a set number of passes (e.g., 4), forcing quicker decisions and testing positional structure.
Focus: Increases pressing realism and encourages smart positioning to play through pressure.
Limit Pivot Touches:
Restrict the pivot player to two touches when entering the grid.
Focus: Enhances scanning, anticipation, and quicker release under pressure.
