Instructions/Setup:
This throw-in routine focuses on attacking play in the final third. The drill involves two players working together, with one player acting as a blocker to create space for the second player to make a run into free space.
The players begin by running closely together, with the first player blocking the defender marking the second player, allowing the second player to break free and run into the space. Once the attacker is in the free space, they should have a brief window to cross the ball into the box, ideally unopposed if the routine is executed correctly.
Coaching Notes:
• Timing of Run & Block: The key to this routine is the timing. The blocker must anticipate the right moment to obstruct the defender, giving the runner the necessary time and space.
• Run into Free Space: The attacking player making the run should accelerate quickly into the free space and position themselves ideally to receive the cross.
• Precision of Cross: The crosser must ensure the ball is delivered accurately and with pace, aiming for an area that maximizes scoring opportunities.
• Communication: Effective communication between the two players is critical—make sure the blocker knows when to time the block and the runner knows when to expect the ball.
• Quick Execution: Encourage players to keep the routine quick and fluid. The longer it takes, the more likely defenders will recover.
Progression 1: Vary the Cross:
Instead of always crossing the ball into the box, alternate between different types of crosses (e.g., low, driven, lofted) or have the runner take a shot on goal after receiving the ball.
Focus: Enhances adaptability and decision-making for the player receiving the ball and allows for varied attacking options.
