Instructions/Setup:
This 1v1 drill is set in a square grid where players are tasked with beating their opponent and making it through one of the two gates. Players start on opposite ends of the grid, directly facing each other.
The drill is split into two parts:
Without Ball: In the first phase, the attacker’s goal is to sprint through one of the gates without being tagged by the defender. The defender must tag the attacker before they reach the gate.
With Ball: In the second phase, the attacker will now dribble the ball and attempt to get through one of the gates without being tackled by the defender.
Coaching Notes:
• Acceleration & Agility: The attacker must focus on explosive acceleration and sharp direction changes to evade the defender.
• Defender Positioning: The defender should focus on keeping a good distance to make it difficult for the attacker to easily burst past them. Encourage the defender to use lateral movements to mirror the attacker’s position.
• Timing of the Run: The attacker should time their sprint or dribble well, using feints and changes in direction to confuse the defender and create a clear path to the gate.
• Ball Control (With Ball Phase): When dribbling, the attacker should focus on maintaining close control of the ball while keeping their head up to scan for the best opening.
• Pressure Under Attack: Defenders should be encouraged to apply pressure without fouling, challenging the attacker to make decisions under pressure.
Progression 1: Add a Time Limit:
Implement a time limit (e.g., 5-10 seconds) for each attacker to get through the gate, increasing pressure and forcing quicker decisions.
Focus: Increases the tempo of the drill, encouraging attackers to be decisive and confident in their movements.
Progression 2: Add Extra Gates:
Increase the number of gates, placing them at different angles, forcing the attacker to be more strategic in their approach to breaking through.
Focus: Encourages variety in movement and decision-making, requiring the attacker to choose the best gate based on the defender’s positioning.
