Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This attacking drill is designed on a third of the pitch, divided into three vertical zones: two wide zones and a central zone roughly the width of the penalty box. The drill challenges players to work through multiple phases, focusing on different attacking combinations and transitions to build fluid, coordinated attacks. It requires sharp decision-making, movement, and finishing under realistic pressure.

The drill progresses through three phases: Phase 1 is a 2v2 attack in the central zone, where attackers aim to score in the main goal and defenders try to win possession cleanly to score in two mini goals on the opposite line. Phase 2 and 3 move into the wide zones, each featuring a 2v1 scenario with a cross delivered into the box for the central 2v2 players to finish. The drill develops attacking creativity, defensive reactions, and team coordination across all attacking thirds.

  • • Encourage Quick, Sharp Passing and Movement – Players must maintain a high tempo and precise ball control to effectively break down defenders under pressure.

    • Emphasize Communication Between Attackers and Defenders – Verbal and visual cues are essential for anticipating passes and improving defensive positioning.

    • Focus on Timing Runs and Delivering Accurate Crosses – Attackers should time their runs to exploit space while crossers deliver quality service into the box consistently.

    • Train Defenders to Transition Quickly from Pressing to Counterattack – Defenders need to intercept cleanly and exploit the mini goals to capitalize on opposition mistakes.

  • Increase Intensity and Reduce Time Allowed Per Phase
Shorten the decision-making windows to force faster reactions, sharper technical execution, and enhanced physical conditioning.

Focus: Enhances players’ ability to perform complex technical and tactical actions effectively under intense pressure and fatigue.

  • Add a Neutral Player in Wide Zones to Create Overloads
Introduce a neutral player supporting attackers in wide zones, increasing tactical complexity and encouraging creative combination play.

Focus: Develops spatial awareness, quick interplay, and adaptability in dynamic, overloaded attacking situations.
