Antwerp Build Up Into Wide
ADDED TO FAVOURITES

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch
This tactical possession drill focuses on building out from the back using full backs as key outlets during controlled pressure scenarios. The build-up team plays 6 + GK vs 4 pressing players within a third-pitch area, replicating realistic build-up conditions from a goal kick or deep restart. Each attack begins with the goalkeeper, and the objective is to progress play into mini goals positioned in wide zones.
If the pressing team wins the ball, they launch an immediate counterattack toward a full-size goal. The exercise develops composure under pressure, full-back involvement, pressing intensity, and transition play in realistic game-like settings.
• Goalkeeper Must Be Comfortable Playing Under Pressure
Encourage the GK to scan early and distribute calmly, helping the team play through pressure rather than going long too quickly.
• Full Backs Should Offer Constant Width and Timing
Position wide and receive at angles, arriving just as the pass is played to maximize space and passing rhythm.
• Centre Backs and Midfielders Must Create Support Triangles
Offer close-range passing lanes and rotate positions to help progress the ball through short, sharp combinations.
• Pressing Players Must Stay Compact and Trigger Together
Apply collective pressure with coordinated cues, cutting off passing lanes and anticipating backward or sideways passes.
Limit Goalkeeper to Two Touches
Reduce the goalkeeper’s time on the ball to force quicker decisions under pressure and increase the overall tempo of the build-up play across the back line.
Focus:
Enhances speed of play, sharpens technical decision-making, and improves communication and composure in high-pressure situations.
