Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 40x30

  • This central build-up drill is designed to enhance a team’s ability to play out from the back through tight, compact spaces. The playing area covers roughly 40 yards wide by 30 yards deep, focusing on the width of the penalty box plus an additional 12 yards. The build-up team consists of four outfield players plus the goalkeeper, who start each phase by playing out from the back against three aggressive pressing opponents. The objective for the build-up team is to dribble and pass their way through one of two designated gates positioned on either side of the top line of the grid.

The drill replicates high-pressure scenarios, with the three pressing players aiming to win possession and immediately launch a quick counter-attack toward the main goal. This setup encourages quick decision-making, effective ball control, and composure under pressure while emphasizing spatial awareness in a condensed area. The goalkeeper plays a critical role in initiating play and helping the team progress the ball securely through the midfield.

  • • Encourage Players to Stay Compact and Support Each Other Closely – Maintaining tight distances helps create passing options and protects the ball under pressure.

    • Focus on Quick, Accurate Ball Circulation – Emphasize sharp, well-weighted passes to move the ball efficiently through the pressing lines.

    • Guide Players to Use Dribbling to Break Lines When Appropriate – Controlled, purposeful dribbling can disrupt the press and open passing lanes.

    • Reinforce Communication and Scanning Off the Ball – Players must constantly scan for pressing threats and communicate to maintain shape and awareness.

  • Increase the Intensity and Aggression of the Pressing Players
Make the pressing team more active and quicker to close down space, forcing the build-up team to speed up their decision-making and execution.

    Focus:
Enhances composure, speed of play, and technical accuracy under heightened physical and mental pressure.

  • Introduce a Numerical Advantage for the Pressing Team
Add an additional pressing player to create a 4v4+GK scenario, further increasing defensive pressure and forcing more precise ball control and tactical awareness.

    Focus:
Develops sharper spatial awareness, quick transitions, and resilience in tight, competitive conditions.
