Antwerp Isolated Wide Build Up
ADDED TO FAVOURITES

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 30x30
This isolated wide build-up drill focuses on developing a team’s ability to build play through one side of the pitch, either the left or right flank, within a specifically defined area covering roughly one-third of the pitch height and half the pitch width. The setup mimics real-game scenarios where attacks are constructed through wide defensive channels. The build-up team consists of one goalkeeper and three outfield players, working together to progress the ball against two pressing opponents. Their main objective is to move the ball forward and score by passing into one of two mini goals placed in advanced wide positions, representing wide attacking outlets.
The drill encourages players to use the width effectively, maintain possession under pressure, and make smart decisions to break through defensive lines on the designated flank. The restricted area challenges the team to be precise with passing, movement, and spatial awareness to successfully bypass the pressers and transition into attack.
• Emphasize Wide Positioning and Effective Use of Space – Encourage players to stretch the play and exploit the available width to create passing lanes and overloads.
• Focus on Quick, Accurate Passing and Movement – Sharp ball circulation and off-the-ball runs are essential to outmaneuver pressing opponents in a tight channel.
• Encourage Supportive Body Positioning to Facilitate Easy Receiving – Players should open their body to see the field and be ready to receive under pressure.
• Reinforce Patience and Composure in Progressing the Ball – Players must resist rushing and maintain calmness to pick the best moment to advance the play.
ncrease Pressure Intensity by Making Pressers More Aggressive
Encourage the pressers to close down space faster and apply stronger pressure, forcing quicker decisions and more precise execution from the build-up team.
Focus:
Improves technical skill, decision-making speed, and composure under high-pressure wide build-up conditions.
Limit the Number of Touches Allowed for Build-Up Players
Restrict players to two or three touches per possession phase, increasing the challenge of quick ball control and accurate passing in tight spaces.
Focus:
Develops sharper ball control, quicker thinking, and efficient use of limited touches to maintain possession and progress play.
