Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 30x15

  • This dynamic rondo drill features two teams of six players each occupying adjacent 15x15 yard grids, creating a combined 15x30 yard playing area. Each grid is bordered by four mini goals, adding scoring opportunities to both sides of the practice. The drill emphasizes possession, pressing, and quick transitions between attack and defense, challenging players to stay mentally and physically sharp throughout.

At the coach’s whistle, one team sends three players to press aggressively in the opposite grid, creating a 6v3 possession battle. The team with six players aims to complete eight consecutive passes to earn the right to score into any of their four mini goals. This sequence repeats with the coach feeding new balls until the pressing trio wins possession. Upon winning the ball, the pressing players sprint back to their own grid and immediately begin their own 6v3 possession phase with three players from the opposite team crossing over to press.

  • • Encourage Sharp, Accurate Passing Under Pressure – Players must maintain composure and precision despite intense pressing to sustain possession.

    • Stress Quick Transitions Between Offense and Defense – Emphasize rapid reaction times for both pressing and retreating phases to keep the drill flowing.

    • Promote Communication and Awareness of Surroundings – Players should constantly scan the field, anticipate passes, and support teammates effectively.

    • Focus on Effective Pressing Angles and Team Shape – The three pressers must work cohesively to close down space and force turnovers efficiently.

  • Increase Required Passes to Ten Before Scoring Opportunity
Raising the pass completion target forces greater patience, technical skill, and teamwork under sustained pressure, increasing the physical and mental demands on players.

Focus: Improves collective ball retention, tactical discipline, and mental resilience during longer, more challenging possession phases.

  • Limit Touches Per Player to Two or Fewer
Reducing touches accelerates decision-making speed, forces quicker technical execution, and increases intensity by putting players under tighter constraints in possession.

Focus: Develops faster thinking, sharper ball control, and enhanced spatial awareness in high-pressure, fast-paced game scenarios.
