Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch
In this 2v1 attacking practice, players begin from one of three designated starting zones - left, central or right. Two attackers combine to attack a single defender and attempt to score against the goalkeeper. Each repetition challenges players to recognise different angles, distances and defensive pictures depending on the starting zone. After every action, attackers rotate to a different zone to ensure exposure to varied attacking scenarios and decision-making moments.
• Exploiting the Overload:
Encourage attackers to recognise the 2v1 early, commit the defender decisively, manipulate their positioning and create clear passing or shooting lanes.
• Timing and Angle of Support:
Focus on supporting runs that arrive at the correct moment, distance and body shape to receive cleanly or finish first time.
• Decision-Making in the Final Action:
Reinforce choosing between passing or shooting based on defender body position, pressure distance and goalkeeper movement cues.
• Attacking from Different Angles:
Coach players to adjust approach speed, body orientation and touch selection depending on starting zone and angle to goal.
Touch Limit for Attackers:
Restrict attackers to two or three touches to increase speed of play, technical efficiency and attacking clarity.
Focus:
Improves tempo, first-touch quality, faster decision-making and composure when attacking in tight, time-pressured scenarios.
Defender Recovery or Pressure Cue:
Allow the defender to delay initially, then add a recovery run, pressing trigger or directional constraint.
Focus:
Adds realism, challenges attackers to act earlier and enhances execution against recovering or late-pressing defenders.
