Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 15 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • In this 4v4 + counter-attacking practice, play begins with a coach serving the ball into a central area where four attackers attempt to score against four defenders. The attacking team looks to combine, penetrate and finish under pressure, while the defending team focuses on regaining possession with control. Upon winning the ball, the defenders must immediately play forward into a centre forward positioned in a central transition zone. This triggers a counter-attacking phase, where three attackers break forward to attack two recovering defenders in the opposite zone, creating a realistic transition moment from defence to attack.

  • • Quality of Defensive Regains:
Encourage defenders to win the ball with control, secure first contact and look forward immediately rather than clearing aimlessly.

    • Speed of Counter-Attack:
Emphasise quick forward passes, aggressive forward running and minimal touches to exploit defensive imbalance after regaining possession.

    • Movement of the Centre Forward:
Coach the centre forward to stay connected, show at the correct angle and link play efficiently during the transition moment.

    • Attacking Decision-Making on the Counter:
Reinforce choosing when to pass, carry or finish based on defender recovery speed and numerical advantage.

  • Time Limit on Counter Attack:
Add a time constraint for the counter-attacking team to create a shot or finish quickly.

    Focus:
Increases realism, sharpens attacking urgency and improves execution under intense transition pressure.
